ಚೆಲುವುನಗುವುಗಳ ಕಂಡವನ ಕಣ್ಣರಳುವುದು |
ಅಳುವುನೋವುಗಳ ಕಂಡೊದ್ದೆಯಾಗುವುದು ||
ಇಳೆಯ ದನಿಗವನೆದೆಯೊಳೊಪ್ಪು ಮರುದನಿಯಹುದು |
ಶಿಲೆಯಲ್ಲ ಯೋಗಿಯೆದೆ - ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ||

At the sight of beauty and laughter, his eyes expand
At the sight of tears and sufferring, they get moist
To earth's voice, lies a responsive voice in his heart
Not sculpted stone is the ascetic's heart - Mankutimma.

ಆಸ್ಥೆಯನು ಕುಂದಿಸದ ತಾಟಸ್ಥ್ಯವೊಂದು ||
ನಷ್ಟಲಾಭಂಗಳಲಿ ಲಘುಹಾಸ್ಯನಯವೊಂದು |
ಸ್ವಸ್ತಿಗಾವಶ್ಯಕವೊ - ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ||

svasthateya kadalisada jagadaastheyondu guNa |
aastheyanu kundisada taaTasthyavondu ||
naShTalaaBangaLali laGuhasyanayavondu |
svastigaavashyakavo - mankutimma ||

Worldly interest that doesn't perturb healthy balance,
Indifference that in no way diminshes sincere passion,
Gentle and humorous in times of loss as well as gain -
Essential are these for a serene living - Mankutimma.

ಸಮತೆ ನಿರ್ಮತ್ಸರತೆ ಸೋಲ್ಗೆಲುವುಗಳಲಿ||

ಶಮವ ನೀಂ ಗಳಿಸಲೀ ನಾಲ್ಕು ತಪಗಳೆ ಸಾಕು |

ಭ್ರಮೆಯೊ ಮಿಕ್ಕೆಲ್ಲ ತಪ – ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ || 

kShame dOShigaLali, kecchede vidhiya birubinali ||

samate nirmatsarate sOl geluvugaLali||

shamava nIm gaLisalu ee naalku tapagaLe saaku |

bhrameyo mikkella tapa – mankutimma || 

Forgiveness in the erred, Braveheartedness in fate's rigour,
Equanimity, absence of jealousy in victories and defeats,
Sufficient are these four penances to attain self mastery.
Illusions are all other penances - Mankutimma.

Translator's note: In Indian context, the word 'penance' is used to correspond to the rigorous meditational practice of 'tapas' usually undertaken to achieve divine blessings. It is in this sense that the word is employed here.

ಪರಿಮಿತಿಯನರಿತಾಶೆ, ಪರವಶತೆಯಳಿದ ಸುಖ |
ವಿರತಿಯೊಡವೆರೆದ ಲೋಕೋದ್ಯೋಗಯುಕ್ತಿ ||
ಪರಿಕಿಸುತ ಜೀವಿತವ ಸತ್ಯವನೆ ಪಿಡಿವ ಮತಿ |
ವರಗಳೀ ನಾಲ್ಕೆ ವರ - ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ||

parimitiyanaritaashe, paravashateyaLida sukha |
viratiyoDavereda lOkOdyOgayukti ||
parikisuta jIvitava satyavane piDiva mati |
varagaLI naalke vara – mankutimma || 

Desire that knows its limits; Happiness that ceases to be bonded;
Proficiency in worldly professions, amalgamated with detachment;
Intellect that examines life to always pursue truth alone,
Noblest are these four boons - Mankutimma.

ಹೊಸತನವೆ ಬಾಳು; ಹಳಸಿಕೆಯೆಲ್ಲ ಸಾವು ಬಿಡು ।
ರಸವು ನವನವತೆಯಿಂದನುದಿನವು ಹೊಮ್ಮಿ ॥
ಹಸನೊಂದು ನುಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಡೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನೋಟದಲಿ ।
ಪಸರುತಿರೆ ಬಾಳ್ ಚೆಲುವು – ಮಂಕುತಿಮ್ಮ ||

hosatanave baaLu; haLasikeyella saavu biDu|
rasavu navanavateyinda anudinavu hommi||
hasanondu nuDiyalli naDeyalli nOTadali |
pasarutire baaL cheluvu – mankutimma||

Freshness is life; Staleness is death, discard it.
While joy springs from freshness everyday,
And spreads exquisiteness in speech, action and vision,
Then life is beautiful - Mankutimma.
